Annelie Botes (SA Author) once said she wrote because it wasn't so much as someone reading the story it was more the case of someone writing the story. Being read and paid are just bonusses to the writing.
I'm neither author nor journalist, though I do enjoy writing in some or other form. I am an accountant. Like my father before me, but certainly aka my girls, not like mychildren after me. I ventured into the accounting world when I was 20 and through sheer luck per chance after my "ventures" into my dreamjob were forfeited in pursuit of family duty and responsibility.
However I took this opportunity as a sign from the gods, and Mother Nature herself, that this choice made at the crossraods when I was totally unprepared for such, would be the correct choice at the time and for many many years to come. It has indeed been so.
I sometimes feel I am a natural accountant. Weird to say so since I never dreamt of being an accountant nor did I ever want to be one. The plans of mice and men and young teens. But the cards I was dealt with led me in this direction and I have a natural ability with numbers (and people). I am no grey little woman, and I dare to add, in my 25 years in the business I have yet to meet the stereotypical grey accountant. ALL the accountants i know and have known, and I mean ALL, have been vibrant, entertaining and colourful both figuratively and literally. I guess it comes down to being in the eye of the beholder.
So I do what I do (right now) because life threw such a twist at me when I was enjoying my normal student life. And threw me to the winds in the opposite direction from where I was going and wanted to go. It happens. I made the best of it. And many years later I met my husband who is, btw, also an accountant. A non-grey one of course.
At the end of the day I do what I do to pay the billsf or my family. Along with it I work happily and live happily.
And being a natural at numbers does help I guess.
