Hodge Podge Wednesday no 4

1. What do you do at the first sign of a cold? Will you get a flu shot this year?

We have just come through winter. I usually dose myself up with extra vitamins which I get specifically from the doctor. I also make a big pot of home made chicken soup in which I add garlic, some chili, even some curry powder, and ginger and it’s always delish and warming when I start feeling slightly fluey. I’m not crazy about flu injections, but I will go for an injection when I get the flu as opposed to ‘preventative’ injections – I don’t believe they work preventatively....

2. What advice can you give about how to conquer fear?

Well it depends on what fear we’re talking about because certain fears I haven’t conquered myself despite any nice speeches to the effect. For example I have a fear of heights and spiders – neither of which I have succeeded in conquering. However, I do my best to assist people (who ask me) who may suffer other fears- eg speaking in public. I try motivate them rather than say ‘conquer their fears’....

3. Share two good things about your life right now.

Every single day I am grateful for two wonderful things: A wonderful job such as I have ( I value my job, but it'snot first in my life) and a wonderful family – husband and 2 teen girls....and I tell them this every day. One  other good thing is I am studying (more work than pleasure of course) part time towards my BA Psychology and despite the work I can honestly say I’m loving every word.....

4. A hot fall fashion trend in 2011 is a return to sixties style...tunics with pants, shift dresses, pencil skirts, cinched waists, bold prints, high necklines and short lengths to name a few. How does this fashion trend fit with your wardrobe and personal sense of style?

I love tunics with pants and shift dresses. I wear pencil skirts now and then to the office, and some bold prints will go well with a lot of ‘plain suits’ that I have for the office. (I wear plain suits with flowery blouses and blouses with bold prints – just to lighten the plain black/navy/brown suits up a bit) . I don’t wear short lenghts anymore, shortest pencil skirt is on my knees and high necks are OK – depending on the rest of the blouse..... so when this trend gets round to us it might just fit in with my wardrobe..BTW I don’t follow fashion fads, but rather have a classic wardrobe I can wear year after year and just change some parts seasonally.....

5. Were you involved in scouting as a kid? How about as an adult?

I was a Brownie for 6 months (junior Girl Guide) and then a Girl’s Guide till I was 18 and I loved every minute...as an adult...nada....!!!

6. Apple, pear, plum, pumpkin...your favorite fall flavor?

I read this as Fall colour - Would probably be plum, along with something like sage or forest green...but fall colours of all colours just entrance me...those Maple leaves and such...beautiful.......Fall flavour? Mmm, well I like all 4 so difficult to choose...I like pear juice the most though...

7. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher?

Most certainly patience, not everyone understands everything first time explained.
I also think a true desire to want to teach and help their students – not just doing teaching as a job but really as a calling.

Here in South Africa we have an appalling education system...most ‘teachers’ in the schools in the townships aren’t even qualified with a grade 12....but due to lack of teachers the Education Dept often takes anyone that ‘wants to teach’...thus besides being unqualified in the true sense of the word, they also lack the ‘teacher’ qualifications I mentioned above.

I am studying my BA Psychology part time with the aim to be a school counsellor, so at the same time I have to do “Teaching” as a subject for the next 3 years as you also need to understand how some pupils ‘learn and understand’ differently to say each other. Not everyone is bright in the direct ‘understand everything first time round’ sense – some really need another way of explaining to get past the first hurdle. My two girls are high school and they are not in a poor country high school in the townships – and I can tell you their teachers make more than their fair share of mistakes which is very frustrating for me as a parent...but I try keep in mind they (teachers) also have their ups and downs so no, everything is not as easy or as perfect as it sounds in the textbooks...I had some wonderful teachers in my high school so I guess my level of reference is pretty high too...

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I have limited time at the moment to blog, but I apprecate the visits and I enjoy the Hodge Podge because it at least makes me think of something specific to write about. However, I am doing a personal 100 days diary – 100 days of ‘growth and thoughts’ that I write offline for myself at this stage. I might share it later. 

A blog I enjoy reading every week - Among several blogs I enjoy – I’m going to paste my fave blogs here every time , just to encourage us to sometimes venture in other directions than our usual readings is Megan found here http://thescentofwater.typepad.com/thescentofwater/

Definitely worth a read.

Have a good week all, and thanks for popping in.Here we are enjoying some Spring sunshine and flowers.........

Your answers are very interesting and tell a lot of you as a wonderful person.
I never knew about the teacher problem in South Africa. There are so any issues that never reach the international headlines.
This is omn e of the reasons I like bloggin; one gets to know not only a preson, but a country from within.
Good luck with your studies.
